Coronavirus: Germany, marriages down during pandemic
Almost 29,200 less than in 2019

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 21 SET - Almost 140,000 couple married in
Germany in the first half of 2020, 29,200 less than in the same
period of 2019, the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis)
said today. Since the German reunification in 1990, the number
of marriages in the country was lower only once, in the first
half of 2007, when the number of marriages was 138,800. The
significant decrease in the marriages celebrated in Germany is
related to the coronavirus pandemic, Destatis said, recalling
that, last spring, authorities limited services and reduced
ceremonies to a minimum to contain the spreading of the virus.
