Poland: composer Szymanowski took inspiration from Sicily
Palermo, bronze plaque and event with foreign ministers

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT. 21 - The heads of Italy's and Poland's
diplomacy will meet in Palermo on Ocobter 23 to unveil the
plaque commemorating great Polish composer Karol Szymanowski.
The foreign ministers of the two countries, Angelino Alfano and
Witold Waszczykowski, will attend the ceremony organised to
unveil the bronze plaque that will be located in front of the
Teatro Massimo.
The event will be attended by the mayor of Palermo Leoluca Orlando, the superintendent of the Teatro Massimo Francesco Giambrone and representatives of the Polish Embassy in Rome.
The plaque was made under the aegis of the Polish diplomatic delegation to Italy in order to honor the memory of the composer on the 80th anniversary of his death. During his life,Szymanowski visited the Sicilian capital city several times and in Sicily he sought inspiration for his works.
The island was his muse: thanks to Sicily, he was able to create his masterpieces such as 'Re Ruggero', which opened this year even the season of the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome, the piano cycle inspired by the Metopes of Selinunte, preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Palermo, or the 'Aretusa Fountain', a musical composition through which Szymanowski translated into musical scores the famous myth of the nymph and fresh water spring on the sea shore in the island of Ortigia in Syracuse.
The bronze plate, whose shape evokes the metope, was designed by the Polish sculptor Bronislaw Krzysztof. The event will take place under the patronage of the Polish Embassy in Rome, Honorary Consulate of Poland in Palermo, Municipality of Palermo and Teatro Massimo.(ANSA).
