(ANSA) - BELGRADE, APRIL 2 - The harbor of Trieste, with 57
million tonnes of freight handled, is among the ten in Europe
that handled most of freight in 2018, show data from Eurostat
published today.
With 441 million tonnes, Rotterdam was the largest freight
port in the EU in 2018. Rotterdam handled more than twice as
much freight as Antwerp (212 million tonnes) and almost four
times as much as Hamburg (118 million tonnes) in 2018, Eurostat
said. Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg were followed by Amsterdam
(100 million tonnes), Algeciras (89), Marseille (76), Le Havre
(65), Valencia (62), Trieste (57) and Barcelona (55).
In the second quarter of 2019, ports in the EU handled 919
million tonnes of freight, almost 4% more compared with the same

"A slowdown in economic activity due to the effects of
coronavirus could have an impact on international trade, and in
particular on maritime freight," Eurostat noted. (ANSA).
