(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JULY 1 - Germany takes over the European Union's six months presidency from Croatia on Wednesday.

"Europe needs us, just as we need Europe - not only as a historical legacy, which we were given as a present, but as a project that will lead us into the future," said Chancellor Angela Merkel on a statement on June 18. "Germany wants to be a driving force and facilitator during its Presidency of the Council of the EU. Our task will be to build bridges and find solutions that ultimately benefit everyone in Europe," said the German Minister for Foreign Affairs Heiko Maas last week, quoted by the official portal of the German presidency, EU2020.de.

The main priorities of the German semester will include climate action, digital sovereignty, Europe's role in the world and post-COVID-19 recovery, according to the EU2020.de portal.

Last night, the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was illuminated with the message "Together for Europe's Recovery." (ANSA).
