(ANSA) - SOFIA, 26 OTT - In Bulgaria, just over 7 million inhabitants, the epidemiological situation for Covid-19 remains worrying with a surge in infections and deaths that have triggered new restrictive measures, including closure of night clubs in Sofia.

The total number of infections since the beginning of the epidemic is 37,889 to date. Ten deaths have been reported since yesterday and the total number of victims rises to 1,094.

Currently 2,036 patients are hospitalized, 146 of them in intensive care.

In several cities of the country's six regions, including Sofia, where the 'red' code was introduced, night clubs and discos were closed for two weeks starting yesterday. In a statement, the Bulgarian Doctors' Association urgently calls for restrictions also on sporting events "where it is not possible to control and guarantee the safety of people". Since yesterday, Bulgaria's prime minister Boyko Borissov, who tested positive, has been in self-isolation after being in contact last Friday with the deputy minister of regional development, Nikolay Nankov, who had also tested positive. Some ministers and deputy ministers who have been in contact with Borissov are currently in quarantine.

Last Friday Borissov also met with a US delegation in Sofia. The Bulgarian authorities promptly informed the US embassy of the situation. (ANSA).
