Strasbourg Court condemns Ukraine over Maidan repression

Authorities deliberately acted against demonstrators

21 January, 15:50
(ANSA) - STRASBOURG, 21 GEN - The European Court of Human Rights has condemned Ukraine for deliberately violating human rights during the demonstrations in Maidan Square between November 2013 and February 2014. The Strasbourg Court's ruling regards the appeals of numerous demonstrators who accused the authorities of ill-treatment, torture, murder, arbitrary arrests, and ultimately violating their right to protest. In the ruling, the Court accepted the majority of appeals and accusations.

The Strasbourg judges wrote that "the "Ukrainian authorities deliberately inflicted ill-treatment upon the demonstrators and were responsible for the death of one of them." According to the Court, the violations committed were part of a "strategy." (ANSA).
