Project will include a 25-km-long tunnel

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 05 MAR - Germany and the Czech Republic have reached an agreement for the construction on a high-speed railway line between the German city of Dresden and the Czech capital Prague.

The agreement was signed this week by the representatives of the German and Czech governments and of the Deutsche Bahn and Czech railways network, the International Railway Journal reported.

The core of the new railway link will be a new line between Heidenau, in Germany, and Usti nad Labem, in the Czech Republic.

The line will include a 25 kilometre tunnel under the Erzgebirge Mountains, will dramatically reduce the travelling time between Prague, Dresden and Berlin and enhance the freight capacity on the railway link, the Journal informed.

"The current Prague-Dresden journey time will be reduced from 2h 15min to 1 hour, while the Prague - Berlin travel time will be cut from 4h 30min to 2h 3min," the portal reported, adding that seven variants for the tunnel are currently being analysed, with the study process expected to be completed by next summer.
