(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS, AUGUST 11 - The death toll from wood fires that have been devastating northern Algeria since Monday has risen to 65, State television reported, highlighting that 28 soldiers are among the victims. Civilian victims are 37.

The majority of deaths have been registered in Tizi Ouzou, the capital of the Kabilia region, 100 km east of the capital Algiers, the most affected region where dozens of fires have been raging since Monday. The situation has forced authorities to send the army to help evacuate citizens. At least 12 soldiers were hospitalized in critical condition.

"Behind the simultaneous start of some 50 fires in different areas can only be criminal hands", said yesterday Interior Minister Kamel Beldjoud, after a visit to the most affected area. Authorities on Monday night reported a total of 41 fires, 21 of which were around Tizi Ouzou.(ANSAmed).
