BRUSSELS - EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell is on an official visit to Tunisia on Thursday, and tweeted that his visit comes "at a crucial time for the country".
"I come to listen to our Tunisian friends - authorities and civil society - to better understand the situation in its complexity and to support the Tunisian people in building a sustainable democracy," Borrell tweeted.
Borrell's visit to Tunisia is the first in his role as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
On Thursday he will meet with independent organisms, established by the country's constitution in 2014, as well as representatives of civil society and other political leaders.
Borrell will meet with the president's chief of staff, Nadia Akacha, and with Economy Minister Sihem Boughdiri.
On Friday, Borrell will be received by Tunisian President Kais Saied, with a press conference to follow, said a statement from the EU External Action Service.
