(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, 08 GEN - The Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce has proposed a master plan to relaunch the Expo of Thessaloniki area, with new spaces for shows, commercial areas, the creation of a metropolitan arch, and an underground parking garage for more than 2,000 cars.

In recent days the plan received the backing of 17 entities including the Region of Central Macedonia, the Greek Industry Federation, the municipality of Thessaloniki, the Hellenic Union of the Chambers of Commerce, and the Thessaloniki Port Authority.

The site Greek Travel Pages said leaders of public life in the city said Thessaloniki "can look at an economic leadership role in the development of the broad region of the southeastern Mediterranean. The promotion of this initiative and its vision call for concrete action and long-term public and private investments".

Voula Patoulidou, president of the Thessaloniki Tourism Board, said the modernisation project of the Thessaloniki International Exhibition and Congress Center (Helexpo) "will have a catalytic role in economic and tourism development in the city".

"We're not just changing the image of Thessaloniki, we're changing citizens' daily life by ensuring sustainability, we're changing Thessaloniki's position, putting it on the map of modern cities," Patoulidou said.

The master plan for the Expo centre goes hand-in-hand with the Thessaloniki underground currently in construction, and the city can expect a turnaround in 2026. (ANSAmed).
