Greece: tax evasion, former Eleftherotypia editor arrested

24 January, 18:02

(ANSAmed) - ATHENS, JANUARY 24 - Serafim Fintanidis, editor of the centre-left newspaper Eleftherotypia (Free Press) for many years, was arrested today by the Greek police for outstanding debts to the Greek State. The newspaper was the second-most popular in the country and closed its door several days ago. Fintanidis, according to reporters, was arrested because an inspection by Inland Revenues regarding the year 2011 has uncovered that a company founded by him had failed to make VAT payments for a total of around 300,000 euros, fines included.

Fintanidis, who became editor of the newspaper in April 1976, kept his position for 30 years, an unparalleled record in the history of Greek journalism. (ANSAmed).
