(ANSAmed) - JENIN, JUNE 17 - Three Palestinians were killed on Friday morning during an operation by the Israeli forces in Jenin, a stronghold of armed factions in the occupied West Bank.

Reports were from the WAFA Palestinian news agency.

The three men were killed when Israeli forces, which in recent months have stepped up operations in this area, opened fire and riddled the vehicle they were travelling in with bullets.

The Israeli army has said that a military unit was on Friday morning exposed to shooting by Palestinian fighters "travelling in a suspicious vehicle", and that they were thus "neutralised".

A military spokesman said that the Palestinians had been armed with two M16 rifles and a 'Carlo': an improvised submachine gun manufactured by small workshops in the Palestinian Territories.

A military vest and numerous munitions were found in the vehicle, the spokesman added, noting that the Israeli soldiers had not been harmed despite coming under fire at close range.

The Palestinian health ministry said that those killed were named Baraa al-Halua, Lith Abu Srur and Yussef Sallah.

The ministry also noted that, in another incident over the night in Jenin, eight Palestinians had been shot and injured by Israeli forces.(ANSAmed).
