TEL AVIV - Two Palestinian militants were killed last night in violent clashes during an operation carried out by the Israeli army in the refugee camp of Jenin, West Bank.
According to Israeli media reports, the operation was aimed at arresting several people there suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. The Palestinian news agency Wafa - quoting medical sources - identified the victims as Naim Jamal Al-Zubaidi (27), and Muhammad Ayman Al-Saadi (26). The second - according to Haaretz - was one of the commanders of the Jenin Brigades armed group. Wafa said there were also casualties and many arrests.
Al-Saadi was "a high-level operative of the terrorist organization Islamic Jihad", according to a military spokesperson who explained that "the terrorist, a member of the Jihad's leadership, conducted a series of armed attacks against Israeli forces and provided weapons to the organization's militants". The other victim, Naim Jamal Al-Zubaidi, the military spokesman continued, "was a member involved in many armed attacks against Israeli forces". The clashes, he concluded, started when, during the arrest of three people "suspected of involvement in terrorist activities", armed people shot "at security forces who responded".
