     - PALERMO- The 2016 "Simone de Beauvoir" prize was awarded to Lampedusa Mayor Giusi Nicolini "for her brave and pioneering efforts in defense of refugees". The award, tributed every year by a jury made up of cultural personalities, intends to honour people who fight for women causes. "Giusi Nicolini - reads the explanatory note - was the first one to take a stand and defend the rights of poor and abandoned refugees; she turned to her islanders, to the Italian government and the European Union and provided Lampedusa with a model reception centre".

The Prize, championed by the Simone de Beauvoir Foundation, the Paris Diderot University and the Institute of France of the Paris Municipality will be formally tributed to Giusi Nicolini on January 14.
