BRUSSELS - Rome has been chosen as the permanent location of the secretariat for the Euro-Mediterranean Assembly, the organisation that brings together parliamentarians from countries on the Mediterranean basin.

"I want to thank the vice president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, for the work that resulted in the choice of Rome as the permanent location of the secretariat of the Euro-Mediterranean Assembly," said EP President Antonio Tajani in a statement.

"This choice integrates all the criteria for quality and efficiency requested by the Assembly itself. Now we must work to relaunch the Assembly, which can play a key role in Mediterranean stability, starting with Libya, where the process towards elections and strengthening the State must be supported," Tajani said.

Sassoli said the choice of Rome for the Euro-Mediterranean Assembly's permanent headquarters is "a success for the European Parliament and a great occasion for relaunching Mediterranean policy".

The EP intends to promote a series of initiatives to relaunch dialogue on the Mediterrean.

The Assembly will be invited to the conference on Libya scheduled in the EP on October 10.

It is looking at creating an event in Jordan on the topic of refugees and corridors for asylum, and another in Rome on childrens' rights and the rights of unaccompanied minors.

The EP and the Assembly will also promote an initiative on the completion of a free trade union between the countries of the Mediterranean.
