Save the date: Oktoberfest in Morocco on 28 October

German Chamber of Commerce sends invite on social media

27 July, 17:40

(ANSAmed) - RABAT, 27 JULY - The Oktoberfest will take place in Morocco? This ambitious date is scheduled for 28 October, in Casablanca. The cultural initiative was organized by the German Chamber of Commerce in Morocco. Beer-lovers however are having sleepless nights. A first attempt to launch a similar initiative dates back to 2015 but it failed miserably due to bureaucratic red-tape: the billboards at the time were deemed as non-compliant to local laws for their explicit reference to sale of alcohol. Now instead the German Chamber of Commerce's FB page launches the invite softly: 300 places in Bouskoura, in the middle of the forest that surrounds Casablanca. "Food-tasting of typical Bavarian products and traditional beverages, in the backdrop of Munich's brass band music". The price might keep some away, from 800 to 1400 Tunisian dinar (between 80-140 EUR) to experience the enchantment of the Beer Festival, but with an unusual Moroccan location.

In Morocco, according to a 1967 law, the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages is forbidden for Muslims and minors under the age of 16. In practice however, since the 2021 Finance Bill, revenues based on taxes on alcohol total 810 million Tunisian dinar (approximately 81 million EUR). There is a reform plan to make the consumption of alcohol legal, changing the penal procedure law, according to experts, so that "those who pay a tax on alcohol are not liable to be arrested for its consumption".
