(ANSA) - ROME, 04 FEB - After postponements due to Covid, the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup kicks off Thursday evening in Qatar, with continental champions and the home club, Al Duha, the champion of Qatar.

Also taking the field are: European champions Bayern Munich; the African team Al Ahly from Egypt; the Koreans of Ulsan Hyundai, the Asian champions; the Mexican squad Tigres from North-Central America; and the winners of the Copa Libertadores, Palmeiras, from South America.

On Thursday, Ulsan Hyundai, the Korean team that won the Asian Cup beating out the Iranians of Persepolis, will play against Tigres.

Then Al Ahly will take the field against Al Duhail.

This is the 6th time the Egyptians have participated in the Club World Cup, confirming their domination of the African Champions League.

They are aiming to reach the semifinals to challenge the Germans of Bayern Munich, who are the favorites given that European clubs have won 12 of the past 13 editions of the competition.

In the other semifinal are the Brazilians of Palmeiras, who just last week became the South American champions, beating Santos.

The tournament is also a dress rehearsal for Qatar, ahead of the 2022 World Cup that will take place there.

This factor was also highlighted in recent days with the signing of an agreement between the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and the organising committee for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 with the Qatar Agency for Human Rights for a collaboration in raising the topic of human rights of workers as the World Cup approaches.(ANSAmed).
