(ANSA) - ISTANBUL, 09 FEB - Turkish intellectuals ranging from Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk to Elif Safak, Asli Erdogan and Ece Temelkuran are speaking out in support of teachers and professors at Istanbul's Bosphorus University who have been protesting for 40 days against the appointment of Melih Belu - considered close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan - as university rector.

A total of 147 supporters signed a letter titled "We Won't Look Down", the symbolic slogan of the protest movement, in reference to threatening expressions used by an undercover police officer against a student.

In recent days protesters have been repressed with stun grenades and tear gas, and more than 500 people have been taken into custody.

"Students, members of the faculty and university personnel have been exercising their democratic right to protest, a right guaranteed by the constitution," therefore "we are witnessing with displeasure the illegality and pressure that they are being subjected to", the letter said.

"We will not kneel in front of persecution and oppression. We will not look down," the letter said.(ANSAmed). (ANSA).
