(ANSAmed) - NICOSIA, JULY 18 - Two tragedies by Aeschylus are to travel for the first time to Cyprus in a production staged by Italian director Daniele Salvo.

The Libation Bearers and The Eumenides from the Oresteia trilogy are arriving in Cyprus after the productions' successes at the Syracuse Greek Theatre and Pompeii, in May and June, respectively.

The productions are part of the activities of the National Institute of Ancient Drama (INDA), which is celebrating its centenary this year.

The event is part of the 18th International Festival of Ancient Greek Tragedy, organized by the Cypriot education and culture ministry, the Cypriot International Theatre Institute, the Cypriot Tourism Organisation, and under the auspices of the Italian embassy in Nicosia within the framework of the Italian presidency of the European Council.

The cast of actors includes Francesco Scianna (Orestes), Marco Imparato (Pylades), Melania Giglio (Electra), Elisabetta Pozzi (Clytemnestra), Graziano Piazza (Aegisthus), and Paola Gassman (Athena). Prefect Alessandro Giacchetti and Italian Ambassador to Cyprus Guido Cerboni welcomed the cast and directors to the island Thursday.

Two performances are planned: one Friday night in the Makarios III amphitheatre and one on Saturday in the Ancient Odeon of Paphos. (ANSAmed).
