FERRARA - The 12th edition of the Jewish Book Festival will be held September 23 to 26.
It is one of the main cultural events created by by the Museo Nazionale dell'Ebraismo Italiano and the Shoah-Meis in Ferrara.
Through book presentations, events, live performances, screenings, and concerts, the literary festival has enabled thousands of people to come into contact with the cultural wealth of Judaism and has become a regular appointment for the city.
The garden of the museum will host - under a sukkah, a traditional hut built for the Jewish festival of Sukkot - about a dozen guests including Israeli writer Eshkol Nevo, professor Luciano Canfora, former prime minister Romano Prodi, and the writers Igiaba Scego and Alessandro Piperno.
The main theme will be 'home', a word which has often been used in recent months.
For Judaism, home is a tool for the transmission of identity and values, a resource that has enabled the survival of a population in the diaspora.
The word used in Hebrew is Bayit, the initial letter of which -Bet- is the first consonant of the alphabet and has a shape that is closed on three sides, a symbol of protection as well as cultural permeability.
"The Jewish Book Festival," said Meis president Dario Disegni, "is one of the cardinal events that represents the heart and mission of the museum. For the second year in a row, despite the difficulties and limits imposed by the pandemic, we did not want to give up a festival that brings with it invaluable culture" and which "celebrates books, Jewish identity, and dialogue".
