Mideast: Kerry meets with Abu Mazen in Riyadh

US to give Egypt $190+ mln, but gov't must ensure stability

04 March, 18:12

(ANSAmed) - ROME, MARCH 4 - US Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian President Abu Mazen in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh, the US State Department tweeted on Monday along with a photo of the two delegations sitting at a table.

Kerry is in Saudi Arabia on the last leg of his mission to Europe and the Middle East, which wraps after stops in Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

Kerry yesterday left Egypt after two days of talks with President Mohamed Morsi and opposition leaders. The US will help Egypt overcome its severe economic crisis, but the Muslim Brotherhood-led government must ensure stability, Kerry said. The US will give Egypt a first tranche of $190 million (out of the $450 million currently under congressional debate) plus $60 million from a fund to support businesses, because the crisis is connected to the political instability that followed the overthrow of the pro-Western, authoritarian regime of Hosni Mubarak two years ago, Kerry said. Kerry will likely bring up this issue at the meetings in Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Qatar, although the official agenda only includes the Syria and Iran questions. (ANSAmed).
