Concrete projects, focusing on small and medium businesses

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, SEPTEMBER 17 - Launched in Tunis on Tuesday, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Med4Jobs program is designed to fill the gap between supply and demand by developing an entrepreneurial culture and with it, a private sector in unemployment-plagued Southern Mediterranean countries.

Presented at the two-day UfM Mediterranean Economic Conference which kicked off today, Med4Jobs was conceived as an ''inter-sectorial'' program based on concrete projects, thus marking a departure from past practices, which saw funds being allocated but seldom translating into action. The idea is to leverage people's existing skills, and to train them in new skills with market demand in mind. The focus is on small and medium businesses and on the interchange of strategies, with the involvement of relevant national ministries as well as local, national, regional and international organizations.

The methodology is pragmatism, and gradual development fostering the link between employment and territorial development, UfM Secretary General Fathallah Sijilmassi explained.

''Thanks to this opportunity we call on all those with a concrete project to come meet with us, and we also call on UfM member governments to join us in taking action,'' the secretary general added. (ANSAmed).
