ROME - Premier Mario Draghi said Tuesday that the government will put Rome forward to host the 2030 Universal Exposition or Expo.
"It is without doubt a great opportunity for the development of the city," he said in a letter to mayoral candidates in the upcoming elections in the Italian capital.
Draghi thanked the candidates for the unity they had shown "in favour of our capital".
Mayor Virginia Raggi posted on Facebook, using Roman dialect "Daje (come on)!! Rome official candidate to host the Expo in 2030, one of the most important international events...a demonstration that you can do anything in Rome".
Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said hosting Expo 2030 in Rome "would mean a restart for the whole of Italy, with fresh and remarkable opportunities for jobs and economic rebirth".
He said "this is the starting point for a new path. It is another green challenge, of urban development and economic growth for our capital, and there is so much to be done.
"They are going to be intense months and we will have to give our all to crown this bid", Di Maio stressed, urging all institutions to work together.
