Euromed: Pittella, Heritage IV good example of cooperation

EP vice president, EU policies must be revised thoroughly

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, MARCH 20 - The Euromed Heritage IV programme ''is one of the most interesting examples of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation,'' said vice president of the European Parliament Gianni Pittella (S&D). He made this statement today in Brussels after a meeting with a delegation of the EU programme, which works together with partner countries in the Mediterranean area. According to Pittella, ''supporting these projects at the same time means dealing with questions regarding economic growth, for example through the development of tourism linked to cultural heritage.'' Pittella mentioned more advantages of the programme, like ''the promotion of high levels of vocational training, the improvement of administrative structures, but also an increased understanding between people, starting with the protection of their cultural, religious and civil heritage.'' Pittella added that ''the recommendations made by the people responsible for Euromed Heritage could be re-launched in the Euro-Mediterranean Parliament Assembly on March 24 and 25 in Rabat, Morocco. The event will offer an opportunity to take stock of cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean, in the light of the recent changes in the region. ''Unfortunately,'' Pittella continued, ''many aspects of the Barcelona process have not come from the ground. In fact, as the Arab Spring makes clear with all its potential positive energy and contrasts, a thorough revision of European policies for the Mediterranean has been necessary for some time.''
