ROME - The largest international lesson on the regenerative power of food systems for the good of the planet will be held on April 22 for Earth Day.
The event, a 24-hour digital marathon on sustainability, has been named 'Food for Earth' and was organised by the UN, the Future Food Institute, and the FAO e-learning Academy .
Following the success of the previous edition, which brought together over 100 experts with 24 work sessions and over 100,000 participants from around the world, a virtual marathon for the planet that - as a sort of 'Olympic torch - will travel from east to west and involve entrepreneurs, start-ups, scientists, journalists, young leaders, policymakers, consultants, and farmers from around the world in order to share knowledge on best experiences for sustainable food systems.
The planet is suffering: at a global level, about 25% of the Earth's terrain has been damaged.
Every year, some 24 billion tons of fertile land is lost, mostly due to unsustainable agricultural practices. Greenhouse gas emissions are also a major problem and 18.4% of them are directly caused by agriculture and forestry.
The event, which is one of the initiatives organised by, a Washington-based organization that for the past 51 years has been organising World Earth Day, will cross all G20 nations, the Mediterranean, emerging countries and World Natural World Heritage Sites.
Among those taking part will be FAO Director General QU Dongyu, FAO Deputy Director and Special Advisor Maurizio Martina and Italian foreign minister Luigi Di Maio, as well as ministers and institutional representatives from around the world.
The town of Pollica near the southern city of Salerno is where Italy will connect, with the event broadcast on the Youtube channel of the Future Food Institute and on the website of the event:
