(ANSAmed) - NAPLES, 21 SEPTEMBER - The Sultanate of Oman has declared the import of single-use plastic bags illegal. The ban will enter into force on 1 January, 2023.

The government's decision makes it illegal for private companies, institutions and individuals to import plastic bags to the country. Those who do not respect the law will incur in a fine of up to 2,500 USD which will be doubled in case of reiterated offense.

The announcement, states the daily newspaper The National, was given by the minister of Commerce and Industry, Qais Yousef.

Oman's Environmental Authority has introduced the ban with fines which vary according to the entity of the violation. Single-use bags were replaced with thicker 50-micron bags, which are provided free at most shops.

Oman is one of the countries that is strongly fighting the use of plastic bags which are responsible for the death of marine sea life by the plastic bags that end up in the sea.
