Meetings in Nicosia, Athens and Italy

15 September, 16:40

(ANSAmed) - ROME, 15 SET - A series of public meetings organised as part of the international conference "Dante and Greece" will take place Monday, September 27, in Nicosia (Cyprus), followed by Athens on September 30 and then in four Italian cities: Bari, Salerno, Milan and Ravenna.

The conference was created with funding from the "National Committee for Celebrations of the Seven Hundred Years Since the Death of Dante Alighieri" and promoted by a series of Italian, Cypriot and Greek associations and institutions (the Italian Philhellenic Society, the Italian Institute of Culture of Athens, the Athens and Nicosia committees of the Dante Alighieri Society, the SEPI Association and ETP Books publishing in Athens, the Lectura Dantis Metelliana, as well as the Department of Humanities and the Department of Human, Philosophical and Formation Sciences at the University of Salerno and the Department of Humanities at University of Bari "Aldo Moro").

The scientific director of the project is professor Irene Chirico of the University of Salerno, joined by a prestigious scientific committee made up of professors Davide Canfora (University of Bari), Paolo Cesaretti (University of Bergamo), Giulio Maria Chiodi (University of Insubria), Chrysa Damianaki (University of Salento), Rosa Giulio (University of Salerno), Michael Pieris (University of Cyprus), Ioannis Tsolkas and Gerasimos Zoras (University of Athens).

The primary subject of the study, which is already operating remotely in part (recordings available on the Italian Philhellenic Society's YouTube channel), was the search for the many elements of Greekness that can be found in Dante's work.

The upcoming meetings in Nicosia and Athens will explore the extraordinary influence that Dante Alighieri had, and still has, on Greek and Cypriot poetry.

The project will then be divided into a series of round tables, where the results of the research will be discussed.

It will end on November 20, 2021 at Dante's tomb in Ravenna, with a recitation of the poet's verses in Greek.

Andrea Cavallari, Italian ambassador to Cyprus, will attend the meeting in Nicosia; while Patrizia Falcinelli, Italian ambassador to Greece, will attend the one in Athens. (ANSAmed).
