(ANSAmed) - Milan, May 14 - Scientists and researchers on
Thursday highlighted the need to "reclaim the model of the
Mediterranean diet" at a conference at the Expo 2015 world's
fair.
"The young generations are abandoning it," warned Cosimo Lacirignola, director of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) in Bari. In a message sent to the conference titled "Does a Mediterranean diet still exist?", Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin said the traditional diet of largely plant-based foods with low levels of red meat and saturated fats is an "excellent model for improving health and the local economy".
"It is our duty to combat poor diets," she added.
