(ANSAmed) - TUNIS - The leader of the Unified Democratics Patriots Party, Chokri Belaid, a member of Tunisia's opposition, died after being shot as he was leaving his home in Tunis on Wednesday morning. According to the first reports, Belaid was killed with four short-range gun shots.

Belaid was a leading member of Nidaa Tounes, a new political bloc which is today Tunisia's main opposition member. Nidaa Tounes has been repeatedly targeted by militia supporting the National League for the Protection of the Revolution which backs the government. According to the first reports following his death, Belaid was gunned down and intentionally assassinated. (ANSAmed)
