Syria: country on path of destruction, UN official says

Crisis will last years more; no humanitarian aid reaches Assad

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, MARCH 4 - Syria ''is on the path of destruction'' and ''Syrians will pay the price of all this for a long time'', UN humanitarian aid for Syria coordinator Radhouane Noucier told ANSAmed in an interview on Monday.

''The crisis will go on for a lot longer than we think, and civilians are paying the highest price as the fighting continues. They will have to do so for a long time, maybe years,'' said the Tunisian official, who works out of the Damascus office of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Speaking with ANSA in Beirut during a visit, Noucier denied reports that some of the UN aid for Syria is ending up in the coffers of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. ''That is totally false. The Syrian government does not get a cent of the funds we raise for humanitarian aid. As happens in other scenarios, we distribute the aid through local and foreign NGOs on the ground in Syria,'' Noucier explained. (ANSAmed).
