(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT - Syrian government forces have gained control of Khaldiyve, a key area in the city of Homs so far considered a rebel stronghold, state-run television reported on Monday.

'The armed forces have once again brought security and stability to the whole district of Khaldiyeh', said the official broadcaster which in the past few days had shown footage of government troops advancing in the rebel-held neighbourhood.

On Saturday troops loyal to the regome re-gained control of the old mosque of Khalid Ibn al Walid, another stronghold of the armed opposition.

The fall of Khaldiyeh is another major setback for rebels after they lost the strategic city of Qusayr, some ten km from the border with Lebanon, to government forces at the beginning of June. (ANSAmed)
