Gaza: Fides, school hit after Catholic Church area bombed

Building of parish priest Hernandez damaged

(ANSAmed) - VATICAN CITY, JULY 29 - An Israeli bombardment of Gaza Tuesday morning near the Holy Family Catholic church partially destroyed its school, the parish priest's office and other church facilities, parish priest Jorge Hernandez was quoted as saying by Vatican missionary news agency Fides. The raid had originally targeted a home located a few meters away from the church complex, which was completely destroyed.

Late on Monday afternoon, the Israeli army sent text messages to residents in al-Zeitun - an eastern district of Gaza City where the Catholic and Orthodox churches are located - telling them to leave their homes as they would be bombed. Many fled but the evacuation was not possible for those currently living in the church: along with Argentine parish priest Jorge Hernandez, three nuns with the Mother Theresa order are living at the complex with 29 disabled children and nine elderly women in their care. ''We spent a difficult night but we are here.

This absurd war continues'', said Father Hernandez. ''After destroying the district of Shujayeh, they are now targeting Zeitun. Everything is going on around us. Hamas militants continue to fire rockets and then hide in backstreets. And we can't do anything. We can't evacuate, it's impossible with the children. Their families live around here. And it can be more dangerous to live than stay here. We try to stay where it is safer, always on the ground floor''.(ANSAmed).
