(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, OCTOBER 22 - Kurdish-Syrian forces announced the creation of a new Kurdish-majority administrative district in the north of Syria, on the border with Turkey.

A spokesman for the Kurdish-Syrian militia (Ypg), quoted by the pan-Arab press, said the Syrian town of Tal Abyad, on the Turkish border north of Raqqa, has now become the county-seat of the fourth "canton" of the self-proclaimed "autonomous area of "Western Kurdistan" (Rojava).

The other three "cantons" of "Rojava" being Afrin (north-west), Kobane (centre)and Jazira (north-east). After it was seized by Isis, in January last year, Tel Abyad was retaken by Ypg militias supported by Turkey and by anti-Isis coalition raids.

Kurdish militias supported by Arab fighters have moved southwards in the vicinity of Ayn Issa, the de facto border between the Kurdish area and Isis, approximately 50 km north of Raqqa, the capital of the so-called Islamic State in Syria.
