BRUSSELS - EU border agency Frontex on Friday said that 13,740 migrants arrived in Italy in November, a majority of whom were from Nigeria and Guinea.

It said the number is half that of October but four times as many migrants as the same month in 2015.

Over 173,000 migrants were detected on the Central Mediterranean route over the first 11 months of 2016, which is about a fifth more than the same period in 2015, Frontex said.

"Even as the weather worsened near the Libyan coast, people smugglers continued to force large numbers of migrants onto unseaworthy boats, putting them in grave danger," it said.
