ISTANBUL - Turkey's population in 2018 surpassed 82 million residents, with annual growth of nearly 1.2 million people, up 1.4%, according to data distributed Friday by the state registration system based on residency (ADNKS).

The population is divided nearly equally by gender, with 41.1 million men and 40.9 million women, and has a median age of 32, a slight increase.

In recent years Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has strongly pushed for strengthening demographic growth, maintaining that "every woman should give birth to at least three children".

The most populous city is Istanbul, with more than 15 million registered residents.

However, various estimates linked to continual urban expansion and unofficial immigration suggest higher numbers.

Istanbul is followed by the provinces of Ankara and Smyrne, with 5.5 and 4.3 million residents, respectively.(ANSAmed).
