(ANSAmed) - BERLIN, JULY 1 - Donations to a fundraiser launched on Sunday for the humanitarian organisation Sea Watch following the arrest of the captain of the Sea Watch 3, Carola Rackete, have already surpassed one million euros.

The fundraiser was launched by German TV hosts Jan Boehmermann and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf.

Donations from Germany have already reached 735,000 euros, with more than 410,000 euros coming from the initiative's Italian Facebook page.

The collection was taken up to pay sanctions imposed on Rackete for having forced entrance into the port of Lampedusa, as well as for judicial expenses.

Any leftover funds will be used by the NGO to procure a new ship in the event that the ship captained by Rackete is seized or confiscated.(ANSAmed).
