(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, NOVEMBER 25 - A project called Mediterranean University as Catalyst for Eco-Sustainable Renovation (Med-EcoSuRe) officially launched on November 23 in Tunis.

It aims to evaluate and implement innovative, eco-sustainable solutions for energy restructuring at Mediterranean universities and to develop an active support approach to the decision-making process.

The project is coordinated by the Mediterranean Renewable Energy Centre (Medrec) together with Tunisia, Palestine, Italy, and Spain.

It includes public universities, an Italian agency for energy and the environment (ANEA of Naples), and a Spanish association for internationalisation and innovation in solar companies (Solartys). Med-EcoSuRe is a three-year project financed as part of the EU programme "ENI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin" with a budget of 2.9 million euros, 2.6 million of which are from the EU.

The project will test and implement innovative restructuring measures to decrease energy consumption in public university buildings.

Three universities were chosen as pilot sites in Tunisia, Palestine, and Italy (Unifirenze-Dida - Federico II Napoli - Unicampania - Dadi). Restructuring will be based on gathered data, energy audits, and successful solutions used in other initiatives.

In the living lab, university researchers from the Mediterranean and stakeholders will try to build a common vision around difficulties in eco-sustainable energy restructuring, supporting a decision-making process on a regional level.

Participants at the project's inauguration included, among others, representatives from the Tunisian Ministry of Industry and SMEs, the Agence Nationale pour la Maîtrise de l'Energie, and the Italian Ambassador to Tunisia Lorenzo Fanara.(ANSAmed).
