ISTANBUL - Turkey on Friday completed an 81-km security barrier along its border with Iran, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu announced on Twitter.

The wall runs along the eastern border of the Agri province at the northwestern edge corner of Iran.

It covers about 15% of the 534-km border between the two countries and consists of reinforced concrete blocks topped by barbed wire and accompanied by an electronic surveillance system with videocameras.

    The work took two years.

Soylu said that the barrier will help against the threats from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which is designated a terrorist organisation by the US, EU and Turkey, and groups affiliated with it.

A similar wall has in recent years been built along much of the Turkish-Syrian border.
