(ANSAmed) - VALLETTA, JANUARY 27 - Two Maltese priests were arrested on Monday by Maltese police for sexually abusing a child in 2003 when he was eight, an altar boy at a parish church in Xaghra, on the island of Gozo.

The two men - Joseph Sultana, 84, and Joseph Cini, 70 - separately appeared before the court of Gozo on Wednesday morning. Both pronounced themselves not guilty. The case was reported by Maltese civil authorities to the Commission of safeguard of the Catholic church. The curia confirmed in a statement that it gave police all information on the case and urged the public to denounce all cases of alleged sexual abuse.

The court in Gozo listened to the victim, who is today 26, ordering not to publish his name. The man, who currently lives abroad, said he only took up the courage to talk about the abuse in 2019 with the bishop of Gozo, who encouraged him to talk to the Commission.(ANSAmed)
