ISTANBUL - The dean of the prestigious Bosphorus University in Istanbul, Melih Bulu said he has "no intention" of resigning after hundreds of students protested against his appointment, which was decided a month ago by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"The students have assumed an attitude that limits the freedom of others", the appointed dean said. "It was necessary to take measures", he added, commenting with journalists the police crackdown on demonstrations over the past few days in which protesters demanded his resignation.

According to authorities, over 170 people were arrested during demonstrations organized in Istanbul and Ankara. At least 30 university members are still detained. New protests have been announced over the next few hours.
