MADRID - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) calculated that over 800 migrants died trying to reach the Canary Islands in 2020, an absolute annual record according to IOM data.

The agency had previously estimated 2020 deaths on the route at about 600, specifying that the figure may have been partial.

A total of 210 deaths were recorded on this route in 2019.

In the latest IOM update released Tuesday, the organization also said that it was notified last year of at least five other shipwrecks that it was unable to confirm.

The number of arrivals on the Canary Islands last year (23,000) was the second-highest ever recorded after 2016 (over 31,000), according to figures reported by EFE press agency.
