Spain: curfew to end in at least 13 regions Sunday

State of emergency expires, OK to restrictions in judges' hands

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, MAY 7 - Spain is entering a new phase in the management of the COVID pandemic with new measures, including the end Sunday of a nighttime curfew in at least 13 of the country's 17 regions such as Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia. Limitations to movement between territories will also be eliminated nearly everywhere.

Starting at midnight, on Sunday May 9, the declaration of a national state of emergency that was issued by the government and approved by Parliament in the fall of 2020 will expire. The state of emergency was the main tool on which restrictive measures that limited fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution were based.

From now on regional administrations will need a green light from tribunals to implement new restrictions in case of need.

Most governments claim they don't have enough juridical margin to impose restrictions like a curfew or bans to move between territories. Some examples of contradictory court rulings on the same matter have already been registered. (ANSAmed).
