ROME - Rockets continue to be launched from Gaza on Israel after a night of fighting between Israel and Hamas.
The Israeli military said alarm sirens sounded again in the city of Ashkelon, one of the hardest hit, and in the Israeli areas around the Gaza Strip. The Israeli air force hit 130 military targets in Gaza. Palestinian sources said there were at least 24 killed and dozens injured.
Meanwhile, eight companies of Israeli Border Guard reservists were called into action to cope with the widespread disorder in Arab towns in Israel.
The Israeli military has named the operations that began Monday between Hamas and Israel "Operation Guardian of the Walls".
Military officials said they expect operations to continue for days.
In Gaza, Palestinian militias set up a common operations centre.
In Palestinian media, the launch of rockets on Israel is called "Operation Sword of Jerusalem".
In a video released online, the military wing of Hamas said, "Jerusalem called, Gaza responded".
According to the military spokesman, on Monday over 250 rockets were launched on Israel from the Gaza Strip.
The launches continued on Tuesday morning, with an attack on Ashkelon. At least six people were injured by rockets that hit an apartment building. Media said in one family, a father was seriously injured while his wife and two children were slightly wounded, and two people were injured in another apartment.
Military spokesman Itay Silberman said air strikes on Monday in Gaza killed 15 Hamas militants.
Incidents between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police took place in East Jerusalem. Protests also took place in Arab towns within Israel.
