(ANSAmed) - ROME, OCT 13 - A trial will begin on Thursday in Italy against four Egyptian security agents charged with kidnapping and murdering Giulio Regeni, an Italian researcher found dead in Egypt in February 2016.

In the first hearing, before the third Court of Assizes, the absence in the courtroom of the defendants will be dealt with: Gen. Sabir Tariq, the colonels Usham Helmi and Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim and Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif.

The judges will have to decide - as did the preliminary investigative judge - whether the trial can go forward with the defendants in absentia.

Regeni's parents Paola and Claudio have presented a list of witnesses including the various prime ministers since 2016 as well as foreign ministers and undersecretaries in charge of the secret services.

The Rome prosecutor's office has charged the defendants with kidnapping with multiple aggravating circumstances, and one is charged with involvement in aggravated personal injury and murder with aggravating circumstances.(ANSAmed).
