(ANSAmed) - PALERMO, NOV 2 - A total of 5,000 euros raised during the summer by the Teatro della Verdura theatre in Palermo for orphans at an elementary school in Khan Younis, Palermo's sister city, arrived at their destination.

The funds, raised through a play titled "Come Pesci in un Barile" (Like Fish in a Barrel), were used to buy books, notebooks, winter jackets and other school clothing, and will also be used to start support projects.

The orphans at the school are assisted by the Whatan association, and the children sent a short video expressing their thanks for the city of Palermo's generosity.

The fundraising initiative was sponsored by the association "Voci nel Silenzio" (Voices in the Silence) and supported by the city administration and Teatro Massimo theatre.

Labour unions CGIL Palermo and CGIL Sicily also participated in the project, as well as ARCI cultural centre.

"With the collaboration between the association Voci nel Silenzio and the other associations, we managed to give value and a purpose to the artistic evening organised on 29 August at the Teatro della Verdura, and give concrete aid to the orphaned children at the elementary school in Khan Younis, who were traumatised by bombings in the Gaza Strip, during which they lost their families," said Zaher Darwish, the association's director.

"The school was also able to announce a civil service exam to hire a support teacher," Darwish said.(ANSAmed).
