(ANSAmed) - ROME, NOV 23 - Some 89 women are victims of gender violence every day in Italy, and in 62% of cases it is domestic abuse, according to data presented at the fifth annual event against violence against women, This Is Not Love, in Catania on Tuesday.

Femicide as a proportion of all homicides has fallen slightly this year, the event was told.

Murders of women were 48% of all murders in January-August 2020, and fell to 41% in the same period this year, having risen during the first COVID lockdown.

In 72% of cases the murderer was the partner or ex; in one in two cases a blade was used to kill the victim: and 70% of the women murdered were Italian.

In a poll, one in four Italians said they did not think domestic abuse qualified as "real violence".

Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese announced that a new package of norms including increasing mandatory prison terms would be put to cabinet next week and that all relevant ministries would be involved.
