TEL AVIV - Israel began administering Covid vaccinations to children ages 5 to 11 on Tuesday, based on a decision by the government on the recommendation of the National Committee for the Fight Against Covid.

The committee's head, Salman Zarka, spoke of a "day of celebration for children and parents who can now protect their children".

Israel is the second country in the world, following the US, to start vaccinations for this age group.

The first doses were administered on Monday by local health departments in some parts of the country after the arrival in recent days of Pfizer vaccinations suitable for children.

The vaccination campaign directors, cited by the media, said there were 24,000 vaccination appointments for children ages 5-11 on Tuesday, about 2.5% of all children in that age range.
