VALLETTA - A group of 43 migrants was recovered at sea by a patrol boat of the Maltese armed forces (Afm) but a woman died on board despite an attempt to resuscitate her. The group and the victim disembarked this morning at the port of Valletta. Many appeared emaciated and in bad health conditions. According to the Maltese interior ministry, the group included 12 women and two children.

"After the recovery at sea - said a statement reported by Maltese media - the migrants were provided with the initial assistance they needed but unfortunately the conditions of the person worsened before arriving at the port and she died". The woman's body was disembarked and covered with a white sheet.
Some migrants, including children, received treatment on board two ambulances waiting on the piers before being taken to hospital or a hosting center.
According to data provided by the United Nations, 607 migrants have reached Malta so far in 2021. The great majority were rescued at sea but so far at least two landings have been registered directly on Malta's coasts.
