(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, JAN 12 - The highest number yet of new
infections of COVID-19 in Turkey has been seen, with a total of
74,266 people that tested positive in a single day.
Some 137 were known to have died of it, according to Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.
In a Twitter post, Koca said that the Omicron variant was "dominant" and a "source of danger for those at risk", warning the elderly and those suffering from chronic diseases to take all necessary precautions.
The figures show a sharp increase in the spread of COVID due to the Omicron variant, according to Minister Koca, considering that in December the number of daily cases averaged 20,000.
Since the beginning of the emergency, over 10 million people have tested positive for COVID in Turkey and there have been 83,343 deaths from the virus in the country, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Turkish health ministry said that over 83% of the population has been vaccinated with both the first and second doses, while in recent days distribution started for the locally produced Turkovac vaccine. Some medical associations in Turkey, however, have said that the effectiveness of this vaccine is in doubt. (ANSAmed).
