TEL AVIV - Tension is still high in Jerusalem after new clashes on Monday night between Israeli border guard units and Palestinian youth gathered to celebrate Ramadan near the Damascus Gate, one of the main entry points to the old city.

Army Radio said iron bars were thrown at the agents and fireworks were fired at eye level.

The officers dispersed the crowd and made arrests.

In Jerusalem, a total of 3,000 police and border guard officers have been deployed for the entire period of Ramadan.

A major clash also took place Monday night in the West Bank, when a Palestinian opened fire with an automatic weapon on houses in the settlement of Avney Hefetz (near Tulkarem) and then disappeared.

    No casualties were reported.

The tension also extended to the demarcation line with the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli Army sent reinforcements, fearing rocket fire by Hamas or Islamic Jihad.
